Alcoholism and Tourettes

Postby Sartresue » Fri Aug 01, 2008 2:50 pm

Self medicating topic

Instead of meds, my brother is ashamed of his tics and prefers to drink in order to lessen the severity of his tics. :(

Disabilities: Neurologically dodgy!

Tourette syndrome with other general neurological abnormalities, including:
CAPD traits
Mild Asperger syndrome traits/NVLD/social-emotional processing difficulties/dyssemia
Tactile issues
Irritability (used to have rages)
Distractibility
Absent mindedness manifesting itself as short term/working memory problems
Organisational problems
Possible Harry Benjamin syndrome/dysmorphia
Hypodipsia
Synesthesia (associated type)?

All very mild though - just some dodgy circuitry!

Alcohol makes my tics worse which is probably for the best really.

I went on google and looked around for "Positive Effects Of Alcohol On Tourettes" and found nothing. Therefore this "Alcohol helps Tourettes" is a myth. Sartresue your brother is engaging in self harm, therefore his so called information that it helps his tics may be falsified. It is known that alcohol acts as a Neuro-Depressant which may possibly in theory be helping him but I would not count on it.

To the general public readers of this thread,

Alcohol is NOT meant to be used to treat or cure any condition and therefore should not be used in such a manner, alcohol is designed to be drank on special occasion and or as a treat once in a while. If you or a relative has Tourette's disorder please consult your neurologist to determine a treatment plan that is properly suited for your needs. If you or a relative has an Alcoholism problem please obtain help through the National Council On Alcoholism And Drug Dependance (NCADD.org) (800) 622-2255
