Yesterday, the Phoenix area got hid hard by several severe thunderstorms. We got more rain in one day than we normally get during the entire monsoon season. At times, the rain was so heavy that I couldn't see across the parking lot outside my window. I had to stay off the computer for most of the day.
Dobson High School in central Mesa was locked down for about 10 minutes after a report of a funnel cloud near the school, according to an e-mail alert from Principal Matt Gehrman.
The Weather Service was unable to confirm a funnel cloud, and students were released on time.
Dobson High is about 2 miles away from where I live.
Near Southern Avenue and Longmore, three utility poles were uprooted, and one was cracked in half. Police were diverting westbound traffic from three lanes to one. Traffic signals in the area were also knocked out, and police were directing vehicles through local intersections.
